The eco-committee has a number of tasks: they stop the school's indoor plants from dying; they are in charge of putting the fruit peel and apple cores into the compost bin every break time; in the spring and summer they look after the wild-life area and they re-label the large envelopes in the office so that they can be re-used - to name just a few of their jobs!

Last summer we purchased two mushroom boxes which are 4 foot by 4 foot: we marked them into square feet and planted a number of vegetables (lettuce, green beans, radishes and tomatoes). The lettuce and radish were very successful and the children regularly took them home, however the tomatoes and beans harvested in the summer holidays, which is something we need to think about this summer!

We have also taken part in community litter picking projects - our last was in October. The eco-committee joined other organisations such as the Brownies and Scouts to pick up litter around Hawkinge - we finished with a lovely picnic in the community centre.

Our new project is an energy project! We have appointed energy monitors in the eco-club who will be checking up on classes to ensure that they have switched off lights and put computers on stand by. Those classes who have will be awarded a smiley face, and the class who has the most smiley faces at the end of the term will win a prize! Two members (Alex and Sam) will be reading the electricity meter each week to see if we have saved electricity with our energy saving efforts!
