Tuesday
17th June was a very exciting day at Hawkinge Primary School - year 3
and 4 were put in charge of organising an
Emergency Relief Centre in preparation for a storm that was moving
across southern England and heading towards Kent.
Throughout the day
the children were set a number of tasks; the day started with the
children looking around the school for different things that could
cause damage, such as trees and telephone cables. They then
looked at how these threats could be minimised, and ordered them based
on the damage they could cause.
During the afternoon
the children worked in their groups to plan an Emergency Relief Centre,
deciding where to put a sleeping area, a medical bay and a washing and
changing area, amongst others.
On Wednesday 18th
June the children spent the morning writing up their findings and
publishing them on the internet. These reports can be read here.
During the afternoon a group of children had a FlashMeeting with
Richard Ellwood from the "Kent Emergency Planning
Team". During this meeting the children were asked some
questions based on the actions they took in preparation for the
storm. To watch the meeting they had click here.
